LCD trays or NOT for MB452 Platinum
As of right now, MB452 Platinum Edition includes:
- Two Trays (both SATA/IDE, non-LCD)
- One SATA Bracket
- One eSATA Cable
- One MB452 Platinum housing (use for both IDE/SATA tray)
- One AC Power Adapter
I was wondering if general consumer prefer LCD tray? Is it only for IDE or SATA tray only or both IDE and SATA? Please view image for detail LCD display.(Click to enlarge)
MB452 Platinum will be coming out winter, 2006 and it will be in store spring, 2007.

For the avergage consumer yes the LCD display is a must, I personally like the idea of the LCD display it adds a bit of character to the computer and makes it a lot more interesting.. When I have people come over they always ask me about my Modiflash 722 with the LCD display, I've had nothing but compliments on it..
I think the LCD adds an extra benefit to this product so I'd say keep it. I'd especially like to see a variety of LCD colors like blue, red, and green. This way, people can match them to their system color themes. I would use these trays for the SATA version because I don't know many enthusiasts who use IDE much anymore.
The LCD is a nice touch. I prefer the blue to the green though. I think an even slicker touch would be to make the lighting switch from blue to red at a user selectable point so that you can know at a glance that your drive's running too hot.
It'd be a very usefull feature for 10K SATA drives since they can generate so much heat.
I think that the LCD adds a cool factore but it's not absolutely necessary.
Yes for sure LCD is not absolutely necessary but it add some nice security when everything is going wrong in a computer and believes me it happens. What's mostly important to me is compatibile rack between old and new products: just try to buy MB122SKGF to my resseller but look like it's not available anymore!!! So what to do to stay compatible with the older racks?
I'd say go for having an LCD. Sure it does add nicer looks, but it also adds an ease to monitoring the drives.
My preference: 2xSATA trays with LCD. Offer them in black or sliver.
Since these trays are used mainly by tech-savvy people, the LCDs add a "cool" factor to the design. However, it is obvious that the LCD size is too large for the amount of information being displayed (especially if you can fit an entire "table fan blowing air" icon in there). Personally I would like to see a more hi-tech but subtle display which is flush with the surface, i.e., I don't wnat to see a big beveled window around the LCD. In fact, the tray front should look like the non-LCD display. But when the computer is turned on, the LCD should light up from behind. I don't mind an "LED look", like this clock:

The LCD's are cool, but I don't know if they are all that neccessary? Maybe smaller? Plus, that's an awful lot of information on there that I wouldn't think is really neccessary either.
I don't think personally if it would make me want that one over any other.

on ebay? sure! because I will sell my MB122SKGF as I cant find any place to buy new ones to complete my computers...too bad and not cool because it look like the products in the icydock catalog are not compatible between each others so if you cant find anymore a product you have to replace the complete system and for me it means not less than 18 racks!!! So more important than leds is cross compatible rack!
If I have to add an LCD to any External Storage device capable of holding 2 or more disks, I'd like it to be able to do a bit more than the features currently listed. I have owned several external caddies over the past few years, and have had a number of disk failures. I am looking now for an external storage unit capable of acting as a backup to all the individual disks to which I can store files without significant risk of data loss. I would therefor be looking for an LCD which can also act as a controller for at least 3 disks preferably up to 5 or 6 which will support RAID 0+1,1+0,3,5,6, JBOD type modes and can then be connected either directly to a PC/Server via some or all of e-Sata, SCSI, USB2/FW800.
I see no point in have multiple disk caddies that do not have some element of built in protection for the data, plus imagine the benefits of transfering data at or near the 3GBit/s transfer rate of SATA2 rather than the current per disk limit of 60-80Mbit/s!
I can't think of many situations where an LCD would be unacceptable or at least less preferable. One thing I've found is that people love bling. And flashy lights, LCDS, colored ambiances, and buttons make people drool.
