Not sure I see the point in this. IMHO the only people likely to buy this are laptop owners looking to upgrade their existing disk & retain the old one.
My requirement for external storage is to provide somewhere, other than my laptop, to dump stuff on. This, in turn negates the requirement to upgrade my laptop drive in the first place.
Now, if I could connect my laptop to an external drive housing that gave me resilience - something other than JBOD, I'd be far more interested ...
Since the tray is designed to fit in the MB559 series it is the same physical size as the 3.5" model. Also, 2.5" hard drives are more expensive and (usually) spin slower, 5400RPM vs. 7200RPM than their 3.5" counterparts. So other than offering the customer a choice, I don't see much of an advantage.
It's always nice to have the option though, in case you have some 2.5" drives floating around.

It looks like I misunderstood this post. I called Icy Dock to ask about availability: they are considering making these trays, but are not yet doing so.
In any case, I want one! Here's my situation: I have a MacBook Pro and I'm going to upgrade the internal 2.5" hard drive. I'll need to transfer the data from my old drive to my new drive, so I figured I'd get an external enclosure. I find it more likely that I'll use a 3.5" drive in the enclosure than a 2.5" after the initial data transfer, so I'd like to get an enclosure that can work with either 2.5" or 3.5" drives. I've spent the day looking for such a product and haven't found anything until this blog post now. Please, please make these trays!

I use the X3 backplane that uses the same trays as the MB-559. I use it with an esata expresscard to make video editing and backing-up quicker and smoother from a laptop.
The idea of having a 2.5 drive in the system, then removing it and using it on the road (USB or esata also on the smaller caddy a la MB448UR?) would be a perfect solution - even with the hit in RPM between the 2.5 and the 3.5.
If you could allow your IB266 (available in Europe) to fit one of these trays, that would be fantastic. I know there is a docking station available, however, with a MB453 (multibay), I would only need to use 2 5.25" bays, and it would be very multifunctional.
Otherwise I don't see anypoint, adding a 2.5" drive permanently to such a proposed tray

I'm stuck using the Vizo Saturno. I love Icy Dock products! How about a Saturno alternative!
This is exactly the type of product I was looking for. It would enable current users of the MB559 to use it to create backups of their laptops which now adays use SATA drives. If you were to make a 2.5 inch enclosure with the same concept as the MB559 that would be even better. I would also second that to ease portability issues. Can we expect either of these products to hit the market sooner than later!!!!

What are the chances of a simple IDE tray to be offered?
I can see a huge benefit to offering a tray to slide into the MB559 Series that simply adapts a common IDE 3.5" or 2.5" hard drive to the SATA interface deep down inside the slot of the enclosure.
Who do I contact to help this happen?
This is exactly what the doctor ordered! It means that I can access the old drives that float around waiting to be re-used for more storage and backup.
